Then I noticed. Gradually (very gradually for some) all my siblings began to catch waves with bodyboards (or at that time, known to me as "boogie boards"). I was uninterested for a while, more content to sit on the sand and make castles. After a time, though, I started to feel left out. I must try. I knew I had to. My first wave caught, though, ended with the board knocking violently in my gut. Needless to say, I vowed to never bodyboard ever again.
That didn't stick. But then again, I was always a fickle child (as stated above). Gradually I started tolerating it, liking it, loving it, and finally, being obsessed. Catching waves, the ocean, the sand, the....
No, it will not do to tell you a longwinded story about the history of myself and the beach.
As Thoreau says, "Simplify, simplify."
So,
I love the beach.
I go to the beach to catch waves.
Hence,
I love waves.
The beach is where my adventures mainly happen.
Thus the beach is what I'm going to write little posts about every once in a while.
There is so much to tell. So much to explain. So many characters from our beach excursions to sketch with my words. So many stories. So many journal entries to extract from. Too many embarrassing events.
I give you, my dear friends,
The Beach Chronicles

If only the beach were closer for me, these rain-clouds and thunderstorms are testing my patience.
ReplyDeleteYou have a lovely blog, and you write so well. This post itself painted a lovely picture in my mind of a group of friends having a good time in the surf on their body boards. Coincidentally, I'm a beach and body board enthusiast as well. There's nothing like the anticipation I feel when the waves lift me and send me zooming along its length. Or sometimes towards the beach instead :)
ReplyDeleteAww... Thanks. I love your blog, too. And the fact you live in Australia makes it that much more awesome.
DeleteAnd you don't even know how glad I am to find another Bodyboarder enthusiast. It's so hard to find one these days.
Love,
Rebekah
Fantastic post! The story about you and the beach ,so beautifully written, blows me away... Your words fascinate.
ReplyDeleteI never tried to catch waves but I admire people who do that. I wish I could see the ocean one day :)
Thank you for the loveliest comment, I,m not really shy when I talk to the people who I trust :) I so much hope we will see each other in real live in the future.
P.S. I,ll answer your message as soon as I take some new pictures. I,ve been terribly lazy lately :)

ReplyDeleteYou beach bum, you. I love you for it, though. Ahahaha. It was so delightful to see you over the weekend; we need to do that more often.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to your Beach Chronicles! More soon. ;)
Love,
Me
Haha, you don't want to know my definition of "More soon" I'm pretty sure. I'll do my best to do better though. I pinky promise.
DeleteHey, those magazines have got me indecently excited! I'll definitely email you about it soon. ;)
Love,
Becki
Ahhhh, Rebekah, I absolutely loved this post!
ReplyDeleteMainly because the beach is one of my favorite places in all the world to be(anywhere near the ocean, (or in the ocean) in fact.) and also because your writing is totally superb!
I looooooove body-boarding!! I can't remember when I started doing it, but I totally love it. The rush of riding a wave into shore? Nothing like it. <3
And the Thoreau quote? LOVED IT. I'm currently reading his essay on Civil Disobedience; the guy was brilliant!
Anyhow, I know I'm totally rambling here, but hey- you've given me a lot to ramble about!
Awesome post!
God Bless you!

Dear Sailor,
DeleteThanks so much. Another Bodyboarder! Where have you guys been hiding all my life. Probably in the world. It's a good hiding place.
Thanks. Don't you like slyly placing quotes in there so you don't look like a crazy quote enthusiast but you really are?
Love,
Rebekah
